Love flows from God into humanity
Like a bird
Who rivers the air
Without moving her wings…
– Mechthild of Magdeburg

There is more to life than striving to meet or control the demands placed on us from work, family, and the community we live in.

We human beings have the ability to access a greater awareness that goes beyond our own sense of control to trusting in a life process that holds us in the letting go of control - a Love, Light, Mystery, Wisdom, Wonder. I call it spirituality, a connection to the Divine, to an unconditional loving source that is holding creation, and we are its Beloved.

We all have within us this capacity for wonder, this ability to break the bonds of ordinary awareness and sense that though our lives are fleeting and transitory, we are part of something larger, eternal and unchanging.

- Philip Simmons

Focusing is a body-oriented process of self-awareness and emotional healing. It is a way of listening to our body with compassion, without assumptions. Focusing allows our unperceived perceptions to come into awareness without judgment. It opens awareness to what is there and allows us to be surprised, beyond the logical and rational mind, to let new and fresh perceptions emerge through the felt sense. The felt sense leads to potential resolve and transformation as we listen to the meaningful messages communicated through the wisdom of the body. It is a way of becoming safely embodied, connecting body-mind-spirit, as one sits on the edge of consciousness and unconsciousness.

Our egoic mind seeks ‘solutions.’ It wants answers, information, facts. Our body, on the other hand, seeks ‘resolution’ in the way we carry painful or even joyful experiences. If there is no resolution, then we go to our graves tense and unsatisfied. …The untouched treasure of potential transformation in our body’s way of carrying painful experiences remains a hidden possibility.

- Peter Campbell & Edwin McMahon

Our human senses of hearing, seeing, tasting, smelling, and touching are five distinct ways of knowing or experiencing the same thing, but in very different languages. The felt sense is a “sixth” language to an internal knowing or experiential understanding of an underlying living process that is implicitly there. It connects us to the present moment of being and unifies us to an invisible Life Source that is already working within and through everything.

Your physically felt body is in fact part of a gigantic system of here and other places, now and other times, you and other people – in fact the whole universe. This sense of being bodily alive in a vast system is the body as felt from the inside.

- Eugene Gendlin, Founder of Focusing
